Apple's iPad loses '4G', becomes 'Cellular'

Posted in : iPad, News

(added 2 days ago)

After being hit with complaints and legal action in Australia, it was likely a matter of time before Apple removed the "4G" moniker from its latest iPad.

It appears that the Cupertino-based company has begun removing "4G" from the iPad's name. We checked the Apple Singapore Web page and it now shows "Wi-Fi + Cellular" instead. However, it doesn't seem to have been updated for all countries--Poland's page still shows "4G".

The change is also reflected on the US site, even though the 4G name is factually accurate. The company does mention "4G LTE" in the explanatory text. Meanwhile, the fine print on the Singapore version states that the iPad "can roam worldwide on fast mobile data networks, including HSPA, HSPA+, and DC-HSDPA".

While Apple's tablet has a 4G wireless radio onboard, it's designed to work only with 4G networks in North America. It is incompatible with 4G networks in other parts of the world, including Asia.

Apple iPad, iPhone 2012 Release Date Rumors

Posted in : iPad, iPhone

(added 7 days ago)

Apple iPad, iPhone 2012 Release Date Rumors(CBS News) Apple may launch a 7-inch iPad mini in August, iPhone 5 in September and 10-inch iPad in the fourth quarter, if surfacing rumors are true. Orders for the next iPad and iPhone had reportedly been placed at Pegatron Technology, a global electronics manufacturing company.

"Pegatron has already finished expanding its equipment and labor force for Apple's orders," the Taiwanese technology blog DigiTimes reports. "To mainly focus on Apple's orders, Pegatron has also internally decided to downsize its SI motherboard department and to shift resources to Apple's orders."

According to DigiTimes, a 7-inch iPad will be launched in August. The iPad mini tablet will reportedly be manufactured by Foxconn. Take the rumors with a grain of salt, however. DigiTimes' predictions are very hit-or-miss.

Earlier this year, DigiTimes reported that Apple would release a smaller, cheaper iPad to compete with the Kindle Fire. Those rumors were unfounded, as the new iPad launched without mini version in March. However, the Taiwanese blog was only off by a month in predicting Amazon's 7-inch tablet, the Kindle Fire.

Speculation that Apple will produce an iPad mini is a wide-spread. In April, the Chinese blog NetEase reported that Apple placed an order for the iPad mini at Foxconn. According to the report, 6 million units have been ordered for release in the third quarter. The smaller tablet is estimated to retail anywhere from $249 to $299. The next significant Apple event is the Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC), which will take place from June 11 through June 15.

New Apple iPad 2 models get significant battery boost

Posted in : iPad, News

(added 10 days ago)

Apple is now fitting its new units of its second generation iPad 2 tablet with more efficient processors, offering users far improved battery life. The unnannounced upgrade for the slate, which the company is selling for a reduced £329 since the launch of the new iPad 3, can give users an extra two hours of battery life when they're using the device to surf the web, play music or watch video.

New Apple iPad 2 models get significant battery boost

The discovery was made by the AnandTech site, which revealed that Apple is now using a 32nm A5 processor instead of the 45nm chip that was used on the original device. The processor's performance is the same, so there's no speed bump for new iPad 2 buyers, but the new chip consumes less power, meaning longer battery life.

Amand Lal Shimpi, who runs the site, says: "The gains themselves are significant. We measured a 15% increase in our web browsing battery life, a nearly 30% increase in gaming battery life and an 18% increase in video playback battery life. Although Apple hasn’t revised its battery life specs, the iPad 2,4 definitely lasts longer on a single charge than the original iPad 2." Dubbed the "iPad 2,4," it's difficult for users to know which tablet they might be going as Apple is still moving the existing inventory.

Apple iPad outmuscles Android in global tablet sales

Posted in : iPad, News

(added 13 days ago)

Apple iPad outmuscles Android in global tablet salesSAN FRANCISCO — Apple's iPad outmuscled its Android-powered tablet computer rivals in early 2012, in a global market suffering from post-holiday hangover, a survey showed Thursday. Global shipments of tablet devices and e-readers slumped 38.4 percent in the first three months of 2012 to 17.4 million, compared with a fourth quarter pumped up by the holiday gift-giving season, according to research firm IDC.

But year-over-year, tablet sales were up a whopping 120 percent, in a market shifting away from desktop and laptop computers. "Apple reasserted its dominance in the market this quarter, driving huge shipment totals at a time when all but a few Android vendors saw their numbers drop precipitously after posting big gains during the holiday buying season," said Tom Mainelli of IDC.

"Apple's move to position the iPad as an all-purpose tablet, instead of just a content consumption device, is resonating with consumers as well as educational and commercial buyers. And its decision to keep a lower-priced iPad 2 in the market after it launched the new iPad in March seems to be paying off as well."
Apple shipped 11.8 million iPads during the quarter, down from 15.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011, as its worldwide share rose to 68 percent from 54.7 percent. Amazon saw a precipitous drop to four percent of the market, compared with 16.8 percent in the fourth quarter, and slipped to third place overall. Samsung jumped ahead of Amazon to second place overall while Lenovo vaulted into the number four spot, followed by Barnes & Noble's Nook at number five.

Although total Android shipments were down sharply in the quarter, IDC said it sees a rebound with companies such as Samsung and Lenovo beginning to gain traction with new products. "It seems some of the mainstream Android vendors are finally beginning to grasp a fact that Amazon, B&N, and Pandigital figured out early on: Namely, to compete in the media tablet market with Apple, they must offer their products at notably lower price points," Mainelli said. "We expect a new, larger-screened device from Amazon at a typically aggressive price point, and Google will enter the market with an inexpensive, co-branded ASUS tablet designed to compete directly on price with Amazon's Kindle Fire."

The impact of Microsoft Windows 8- and Windows RT-based tablets, which are widely expected to ship into the market by the fourth quarter, is not yet clear, IDC said. "The worldwide tablet market is entering a new phase in the second half of 2012 that will undoubtedly reshape the competitive landscape," said IDC's Bob O'Donnell. "While Apple will continue to sit comfortably on the top for now, the battle for the next several positions is going to be fierce. Throw in Ultrabooks, the launch of Windows 8, and a few surprise product launches, and you have all the makings of an incredible 2012 holiday shopping season."

Apple WWDC 2012 to Unveil iPad Mini, Macbook Pro (Rumor)

Posted in : iPad, Mac, News

(added 14 days ago)

Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) has usually been a platform to launch the company's new technologies and products. Following its tradition, rumors are on that the MacBook Pro 2012, and a smaller Apple tablet, iPad Mini may be launched during the WWDC which is scheduled to be held from June 11 to June 15 at San Francisco's Moscone West.

Apple WWDC 2012 to Unveil iPad Mini, Macbook Pro (Rumor)

"Mountain Lion is one of the highlights of WWDC 2012, and with the new operating system, Apple might announce the redesigned MacBook Pro that sports the MacBook Air-like design (with no optical drive) and will come with a new processor, a new iSight camera and might ship with 4G LTE support," as posted in PopHerald.

The redesigned MacBook Pro is rumoured highlight its iCloud services, the App store and iTunes. The MacBook may also come with 2880×1800 pixel Retina display and if rumours are to be counted, it may also be built with liquidmetal.

"The Cupertino based tech giant Apple is reported to have an exclusive agreement with Liquidmetal Technologies to use the material since 2010. But so far its usage has remained negligible and the only thing Apple has produced with this material is a SIM ejection tool," writes NVO News.

Not only the MacBook Pro but the iPad Mini might be launched during the conference. Apple may launch the mini iPad as a competition for devices running on Windows 8s.

"Rumors about a smaller iPad have been circulating since before the March launch of the new iPad, which retained its 9.7-inch size. Back in December, there were reports that Apple had purchased 7.85-inch panels from LG Display and AU Optronics. Then in February the Wall Street Journal claimed to have a source who confirmed that Apple was testing the new, smaller screen line of tablets," writes PC MAG.

With Apple usually launching its latest technologies and new products during WWDC, will this year feature the redesigned MacBook Pro, or the mini iPad, or maybe even the next generation iPhone 5? Only time will tell.

Appple IPod Touch – An Amazing Piece Of Entertainment In A Handheld Device

Posted in : iPod

(added 15 days ago)

Today was a great day to get out, I was running my errands and thought hey I’m going to check out the Apple iPod Touch 8GB. So I went to the Mac store, buzzed around the people in line for the iPad3 which made it’s debut today, hats off to that. This was sort of cool, because it gave me a chance to play around with the iPods my favorite being the iPod touch of any variety 8GB, 16GB, and 64GB platform.

Appple IPod Touch – An Amazing Piece Of Entertainment In A Handheld Device

When I picked up the iPod Touch the first thing I noticed is how light it was and how well it fit in the palm of my hand. In comparison to my now aged iPod Classic 80GB, this thing was off the charts cool. It reminded me of a smaller pocket sized version of my iPad2, only drawback was that I couldn’t surf the net Safari doesn’t let you in the store that’s another topic.

Some things Apple added to the iPod Touch are imessage, Notification Center, and Twitter integration. The iMessage is a new feature that lets you send messages free via Wi-Fi. The Notification Centers a nice feature too, keeps you informed so you don’t forget the work party next Tuesday or your daughter’s dance recital on Wednesday. Plus, you get Twitter integration, so you can tweet directly from Safari, You Tube, Photos, Camera, and Maps with i0S5. Another great feature is FaceTime, it enables you to call a friend’s iPod Touch, iPad2, iPhone or Mac via Wi-Fi all it requires is an email account and Apple ID.

What would an Apple device be if weren’t for all those Apps, well with the Tap App store you can access more than 500,00 apps of which there are over 100,000 entertainment and games. Another great thing Apple has introduced is the iCloud, which lets automatically download new apps you purchase on your iPod Touch to your iPad or iPhone. There are literally apps from a virtual library to an app that lets you access radio stations from anywhere on the globe. These downloads are fast and many are free, all of which makes your iPod Touch an almost inseparable item.

Another interesting feature is the camera, every portable electronic device has one these days but the iPod Touch has two. There’s a Front-facing camera above the display on the front which captures your face at arms length and a Rear-facing camera to capture objects behind the iPod Touch in great detail. Now, compared to an iPhone the camera resolution is not as clear (0.7 mega pixels vs. iPhone’s 5 mega pixels) and the Retina Display is darker but there is a brightness adjustment and LED backlighting. I would say that the photo quality isn’t quite as nice as the iPhone. I couldn’t figure out how to focus or zoom, but to be honest I rely more on my Canon Elph for serious picture taking. After viewing some movies I found the HD Video to be stunning, really is amazing how far portable entertainment has come in the last ten years.

One of the many great features on the iPod Touch or any iPod is the music downloads. You can access iTunes music and media store to search through millions of song titles to purchase and download automatically. I found that with the shake of your wrist the iPod Touch will shuffle your songs, or you can let Genius use music you already have and love it will make a play list or mix. The best part is with the iCloud feature I mentioned earlier, you can download your iTunes purchase automatically to your iPad, Mac, PC, or iPhone through a Wi-Fi connection no synching required.

With the Air Play feature I was able to stream my music and video to my home entertainment system through Apple TV, which to my amazement was surprisingly simple. You can setup the Air Play by selecting the brand name of your speaker system, the iPod picks up the information from your entertainment system wirelessly from manufacturers like B&W, Denon, JBL, iHome& Marantz. And like my wife’s Mac Book my iPod Touch has Air Print which will print documents wirelessly through your printer and with iCloud it saves all your valuable information like apps, photos, music, games, photos. With the iCloud technology, I can buy a book on iBookstore or a song title on iTunes and it appears not only on my iPod Touch but my iPad2, Mac Book, PC which is great so if need be I can back up my data on other devices.

All in all, I think the iPod Touch 8GB is a great value, because you get most of the iPhone capabilities without the contract and much more bang for your buck than the iPad2 in a much smaller package. With it’s ability to store 2,000 songs, 10 hours of video, or 10,000 photos I think it will replace my old iPod Classic quite nicely. It also comes with a 1 year warranty, and the quality and piece of mind that I’ve come to expect from Apple products.

Apple's new iPad - Review: The best tablet money can buy

Posted in : iPad, News

(added 16 days ago)

The iPad is the kind of product that doesn't come around very often. Like Xerox, Walkman and, more recently, the iPod, it's when a particular product sees so much success that it becomes synonymous with the entire category. Less than two years after its launch, the iPad is already a category-defining product.

Apple's new iPad - Review: The best tablet money can buy

Not sure what we mean? Here's an anecdote. Only the other day someone walked into our office and popped the question - "Should I buy Motorola's iPad?" Hint: they were referring to the Motorola Xoom.

Back to Apple's iPad. The new iPad - yes, that's what it's called, not iPad 3 - more on that later - builds on the incredible success of its predecessors. Rather than offering something radically different, the new iPad retains the familiar and throws in some compelling upgrades.

What's in a name?
While the name new iPad has confused, and even amused, many Apple's intention is to bring the nomenclature of its mobile products in line with that of traditional computing devices. The 'new' in the name is surely transitional, and the next iteration would almost certainly be simply called 'iPad'.

The latest generation of Apple's ultra-portable laptop is called MacBook Air, just like the four generations before it. Why should the tablet be any different? Indications are that the next iteration of the iPhone would drop the number from its name as well. Years, instead of version number style monikers, would come to represent every product generation, such that the current iPad would be known as the iPad 2012 in the annals of time.

First impressions
The first thing you notice upon taking the new iPad out of the box is that it looks exactly like the iPad 2. It's not until you hold the new iPad in your hands that you notice something different - it's slightly heavier than its predecessors. People who generally use their iPad with a case or Apple's smart cover probably won't even notice the difference.

If you've never used an iPad before, do not let reports of the extra weight bog you down. Just like its predecessor, extended periods of holding the new iPad promise only joy and excitement, and not hurting hands.

As per Apple's specifications, the new iPad is slightly thicker than the iPad 2, but we couldn't tell the difference. We did, however, experience the new iPad's infamous heat. It definitely runs hotter than the iPad 2 because we don't recall our iPad 2 ever warming up to us like the new one does. It didn't deter us from holding the iPad for extended periods of time, so we filed this away under the 'minor irritant' category and moved on.

Display
It's not until you power it on that the new iPad really begins to shine. The all-new Retina Display is everything that it is made up to be, and more. This may feel like your old iPad but the moment you watch your first video, or simply open your favourite website (this one, of course) in Safari, we promise you'll hand down the iPad 2 to your kids faster than they can spell Chhota Bheem.

The official specs peg the Retina Display resolution at 2048x1536 pixels. That's more pixels than a typical full-HD screen (1920x1080). We could wax lyrical about the new display for hours, but nothing will convince you faster than this simple test. Walk in to the closest shop that has both, the iPad 2 and the new iPad, on demo and play any (full-HD) trailer using Apple's Trailer app. The difference between the two will be evident to even the most casual of observers.

The speakers seem unchanged from the iPad 2, loud enough, but not ones that would ever win an award for sound quality.

Camera
The other big improvement from the iPad 2 is the camera. The rear camera is now a 5-megapixel camera, capable of recording full-HD video, just like the one in iPhone 4. Image quality is noticeably better (see comparison shots below), and the lens seems capable of taking slightly wider shots as well.

The front-camera is beefed up too and it's perfect for FaceTime, Skype or anything else that you would want to do with a front-camera.

While we remain unconvinced about the need of having great rear-cameras in tablets, truth is, Apple would have been criticised if it had stuck with the generation-old camera. We are yet to see people hold their 10-inch tablets in the air to click photographs en-masse, but it's nice to know you have a quality option to fallback on should you have a "photography emergency".

Processor & GPU
Apple made a rather bold claim when it introduced new iPad's A5X processor with quad-core graphics, saying its performance blows the competition away. While NVIDIA was initially upset at Apple's claims and wanted to benchmark the A5X against its Tegra 3, but the fact that they have gone quiet since probably means they might have conducted the benchmarks in private and realised Apple was indeed right in its claim.

As it turns out, the additional processing power in the new iPad is not a luxury but a necessity. The apps you run may not feel any faster, but there's a lot more going on in the background, even when your iPad is simply displaying a webpage on screen.

The new Retina Display has four-times as many pixels as the iPad 2, which means refreshing the display is four-times the work. The quad-core graphics engine does a stellar job in handling this extra load, which means you'll almost never notice any lag in terms of performance.

However, we did stumble upon one such moment of "lag", while trying to take a screenshot of a full-HD iTunes rental video in action. There was a slight, longer than expected, delay between the time we pressed the home and power buttons and when the screenshot was taken. However, that was the only situation where we experienced any kind of a lag and the iPad handled everything else we threw at it flawlessly.

Apps/ Software
The new iPad has access to all apps that worked on the iPad and the iPad 2. However, apps updated to feature graphics optimised for higher resolution display of the new iPad will look a lot better than older apps. Overall, the iPad/ iOS ecosystem trumps all other competing tablet platforms (if you can call them that) combined, in terms of quality as well as quantity of apps available.

The new iPad also features voice dictation. We're not sure if it was the Indian accent or the speed at which we spoke, but our experience with dictation ranged from the outrageous to downright hilarious, with the most unexpected of results.

Battery Life
In a departure from usual next generation Apple products, the new iPad is, as mentioned earlier, heavier and thicker than its predecessor. With a faster processor and a bigger display to power, Apple decided to increase the battery size, even if it meant giving up the slimmer, lighter maxim it loves. The move seems to have paid off as the new iPad features the same incredible battery life that made its predecessors famous.

4G/ LTE
"What 4G/ LTE?" you might ask, and rightly so. As of date, India has only one 4G network, restricted to one city/ region, so the 4G/ LTE networking feature seems to be a non-starter. What's worse, even when 4G/ LTE takes-off in our country, the new iPad is unlikely to work in 4G/ LTE mode, since the chip inside is designed to work on a different spectrum than what the Indian networks are expected to use. Customers in UK and Australia are already experiencing the problem and Apple has been asked to stop advertising it's models as 4G in these countries.

The good news is that the new iPad works just fine on 3G-mode out-of-the-box, with performance similar to its predecessor. The GSM version of the iPad (the one available in India) comes factory-unlocked, so you can pop in any compatible SIM. The iPad now also supports the Personal Hotspot feature, that lets you create a Wi-Fi network on the iPad for other devices (like your phone) to use.

Verdict
If you're in the market for your first tablet and not looking for bargains at the very bottom of pit, the new iPad is an absolute no-brainer. Apple products are, often incorrectly, perceived to be premium or expensive but nothing could be further from the truth in case of the new iPad. As of today, no other company could possibly deliver a tablet with iPad like specs at this price-point. Apple manages to do so thanks to its amazingly efficient supply-line and economies of scale.

If you have the original iPad, the present generation offers a compelling upgrade. The new display, cameras and the overall performance gain you'll experience compared to the original iPad, makes the new iPad worth your money.

Things are not so cut-and-dry if you have an iPad 2. At the end of the day, the only thing significantly better in the new iPad is the screen. So is that alone worth spending upwards of 30,500 rupees? Not if you use your iPad for email and browsing alone. However, if you love playing games or watching movies, you should give the new iPad a spin and take a call based on your spending ability.

With Android tablets still trying to get their act together in terms nailing down the hardware as well as the ecosystem to go with it, the iPad seems devoid of any genuine competition. In such a scenario, we can safely say the new iPad is the best tablet money can buy.

Apple Posts Record 1Q iPhone and iPad Sales

Posted in : iPad, iPhone, News

(added 21 days ago)

Apple Posts Record 1Q iPhone and iPad SalesApple set mobile -device sales records in the first quarter of 2012 by expanding its global  iPhone shipments 88 percent year-over-year to 35.1 million units and boosting iPad shipments by 151 percent to 11.8 million units. Apple also outgrew the PC  market overall by increasing its quarterly Mac desktop and portable shipments by 7 percent year-over-year to 4 million units.

After Verizon Wireless reported lower than expected iPhone activation numbers last week, investments firms reduced their first-quarter iPhone shipment estimates to the range of 31 million to 33 million units. According to Apple executives, however, the iPhone experienced strong sales growth in the Asia Pacific and Japan markets -- where sales more than doubled year-over-year.

First-quarter iPhone sales in Greater China, for example, were driven by huge demand  following the January launch of the iPhone 4S and China Telecom's debut as an iPhone carrier in March.

"On a macro basis, China has an enormous number of people moving into the higher income groups -- the middle class, if you will -- and this is creating a demand for goods, not just Apple's but other companies' goods as well," Apple CEO Tim Cook told investors Tuesday. "There's a tremendous opportunity for companies that understand China, and we're doing everything we can to understand it and serve the market."

Huge U.S. Upgrade Opportunity
Piper Jaffray said that Apple's record iPhone sales are proof that the iconic device maker's international growth is only just beginning.

"Apple's March quarter results are particularly important as they are evidence that the company's growth story can be successful in these emerging markets," said Piper Jaffray analysts Gene Munster and Douglas Clinton.

Nevertheless, the U.S. market continues to represent a huge iPhone sales growth opportunity for Apple and its carrier partners. "The bigger story for iPhone is the coming launch of iPhone 5, which we expect in October 2012," Munster and Clinton wrote in a Tuesday investor note.

Among other things, the iPhone's combined smartphone share at AT&T  and Verizon amounted to 64 percent in March. "We believe that number could climb to 80 percent in the next year," Piper Jaffray's analysts said.

According to the investment firm's survey work, 94 percent of existing iPhone owners in the U.S. expect their next phone will be an iPhone. Assuming an average iPhone life of 21 months and an iPhone user upgrade level of 85 percent implies that "45 percent of [Apple's future iPhone sales] through 2015 are 'in the bag,' " said Munster and Clinton.

Apple iPad will dominate through 2016, report says

Posted in : iPad, News

(added 23 days ago)

As global demand for touch screen tablets spreads from established to emerging markets and from living rooms into the boardrooms of the corporate world, Apple Inc.'s iPad appears well positioned to maintain its lead into 2016, according to a new report from Forrester Research.

Over the next five years, the global market for touch screen tablets is expected to grow to 375 million devices sold in 2016, up from 56 million sold in 2011, bringing the total global tablet install base to more than 760 million. Emerging markets are expected to account for as many as 40 per cent of all tablet sales in 2016.

Despite the growth of Google Inc.'s Android software and the introduction of tablets running Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 8 software later this year, Apple's iPad is expected to account for 53 per cent of the global tablet install base in 2016.

The report identifies Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire as the only tablet to establish itself as a viable alternative to the iPad, with devices from Google, Hewlett-Packard Co. and Research In Motion Ltd. failing to keep pace.

Although tablets are currently seen as ``lean back'' devices, used primarily for consuming media and Web content - as opposed to producing documents and other content - about one third of the tablets sold in 2016 will be shipped to businesses, accounting for about 122 million units, as enterprise software for tablets improves.

Apple's continued dominance of the tablet market will help the Cupertino, California-based company continue its push into the corporate world, as it seeks to eat away at Microsoft's dominance among business users.

Already, about eight per cent of information workers are using Mac computers, and as more workers begin using iPads and iPhones on corporate networks, Microsoft's share of the overall operating system for business devices - including PCs, smartphones and tablets - is expected to fall below 50 per cent in 2016.

According to the report, about nine per cent of online adults in the United States report owning an iPad, and 24 per cent of global information workers are taking their tablets to work. About 27 per cent of companies in North America and Europe support the iPad for at least some of their employees.

The world's most valuable technology company will report second-quarter earnings on Tuesday. Apple's shares fell nearly nine per cent last week, pulling back from an all time high of $644 US, as investors began to re-evaluate their positions in the company, which has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past several years on the strength of the iPhone and iPad.

Apple is expected to report earnings of $9.84 US per share, according to Bloomberg, although some analysts believe the company could report earnings of above $10 US per share.

When Apple reported first-quarter earnings back in January, chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer said the company expects to generate $32.5 billion in revenue for the quarter, with diluted earnings of about $8.50 US per share.

Apple sold 37 million iPhones and 15.4 million iPads in its most recent quarter, new records for both product categories. Still, Wall Street analysts remain bullish on Apple, with most rating the stock as ``buy'' or ``strong buy'' and with some price targets reaching as high as $1,000 US.
